Ya, bass isn’t dead. This is a “cute” video and worth the watch, but a giant “meh”. It must be said that AI isn’t a musician. Ian’s line squashed this. Nothing will ever compete with a human musician. This is like showing up for a live gig with a pro tools backing track. It’s simply not a band -why not just setup your computer, have it do all the tracks and vocals, come back after the gig to collect your pay and gear. Why not just mail the whole thing in? And isn’t AI supposed to do mundane things so humans can pursue the things that we truly enjoy? Why would we let it play bass-so we can what - sit in a chair and watch a computer do what we used to enjoy? Let AI and LLMs do the statistics and data crunching. Leave music to musicians.

been to plenty of shows with claypool....at this point it aint about how he plays it...its the sound he outputs.,....its absolutely insane. You can recreate the riffs and play the same notes...but holy goddamn the output of his piece of furniture he bangs on is abolutely incredible

Ian claims that he has "free will", and leaving out deep philosophical debates about it (which I could also have) I would like to say that within the context of professional sessions bass playing, it appears that this transforms bass players into virtual AI machines. Think about this: when you have a bass player on the show making up a bass line for a tune they haven't heard, then you are pleased or not pleased depending on to what extent they have fulfilled your expectations - you have preconceived notions of what it's right to do for a professional sessions bassists. It's like engineers being happy if people have a p-bass, because - G=-d help them - they don't have to change the eq. Aren't they hired for their ability to get the eq right? So there is a stunning desire not to use their creativity even though that's what they're hired for. Similarly professional sessions bassists do their best not to do anything that will offend the producers, which is why you can expect pretty damned similar bass lines from producers. It seems to me there has been an increasing tendency in your add a bass line shows to use bland tracks as a "challenge". Not a challenge to produce bland bass lines for. I absolutely hate one note being repeated - the standard go to bass line for people who can play extraordinarily complex stuff. I could go into a studio and play AAAADDDDAAAAEEEE but I refuse to do anything like that, I even hate repeating a note once. But, at best, I have no more than 30% of Ian's technical skill. But he plays repeated notes repeatedly except for his occasional increased complexity bar. And this is from the professional sessions bassist's playbook - that exactly what Pino does now, repeated notes under bland pop with the occasional breakout phrase just to show he can do it. There is no bassist - and bass tone - that I have loved as much as I love Pino on Gary Numan's "I Assassin", I have listened to the album multiple times because of it, but the rest of his output I'll give up on before the track has finished. Even though his breakout phrases are good, bland music is very damaging to musicians, so I do not listen to it. Interestingly enough, The next video on youtube autoplay is Rick Beato's "The Real Reason why Music is Getting Worse". Well, I've not seen it yet, but I can tell you that what I've gone through already is a clear answer to the question "Why is music getting worse". And behind it all is money, effective, absurd, because if you're not pleasing producers you're not getting work, and if you're not getting work you're no longer a professional sessions bassist and you wind up working in a gas station. And music becomes as bland and boring as everything else that is determined by money, which is EVERYTHING. I'm old enough to have lived in the day when politicians were not bland and boring, and many of them had character, and believed in something and were competent. But, increasingly, they serve money and, increasingly, they are bland and incompetent and are only in it for the money. I mean it, music sould be liberating us from all the money-created boredom that is in our daily lives, but instead it is just adding to that boredom. I have nothing against people earning money from playing "music" but I don't think they should be called musicians, but analogue AI, and they will be caught up with by digital AI, much sooner than if they had been playing interesting rather than acceptable bass lines. LoveLifeGoodness&Freedom, Andy

Learned to play on my dad's Ric. The workmanship is unparalleled. He had the pickup cover removed. I loved planting my thumb in the divot over the pickup. Never played with a pick, so the bridge thing never occurred to me. The electronics don't have to be scary. The real source of discomfort was how damn heavy it was.

Watched this after watching the one with Chris Chaney. Liked that video better. Probably because it was more of a challenge for the musician? I mean, after hearing the lead vocals it's immediately clear that these are the Rolling Stones. Since they have been so pivotal in how pop music developed, it stands to reason that any professional bass player who plays pop knows that Bill Wyman was their bass player and not say, Mark King. So it's clear which way to go with your bass line. Which makes it 'easy' to get close to the original. As opposed to Toxic for Chris Chaney, for whom, even had he recognised Britney Spears' voice, it would be impossible to figure out a certain style as Spears does not work with the same writers or musicians. So could be anyone on her songs. Yet, Chaney was so much closer to the original and to the feel of the song. Don't get me wrong, I love Charles Berthoud, but the way Chaney was so much more in tune with the vibe of the song and got so close with his bass line, it just is peculiar.

So, both of you used to play that bass line wrong? That's just mind numbing to me. Meanwhile in another video, you're both up there freaking out about Flea's bass lines? I mean, did you guys ever listen to Herbie's track? He's playing the same bass line for almost 99% of the track.

Toxic is a great song by Cathy Dennis, most well know as the singer in D'Mob. She recorded the song and gave it to Britney Spears. Her demo version of the song is 99.9% exactly the same as Britney's. I remixed the song and have Cathy Dennis singing out of one speaker and Britney Spears the other. I call it Toxic Duo.

Having complete mobility to play every fret up and down the neck at any time is not what it’s about, at all. That fleet-fingered playing is nowhere. The only people who want to listen to a bassist utilizing their mobility to play all over the board are other players. Mario is awesome and made music millions of people wanted to listen to, and these RUclips wannabe teachers sound like every other lame guitar teacher who goes on about “proper” technique with the thumb behind the neck at all times. Complete bs.

The P bass can get more sounds than you think. Roll on and off your tone and volume, pluck it or play with your fingers, play near the bridge, neck or anywhere in between. They’re different instruments, neither is better. But the sleazy slapping jazz bass does better doesn’t appeal to me at all, and I’d never use it, so personally stands irrelevant
